SHAMANISM AND DREAMS
AS a shaman you may find dreams and the symbols will become a part of your life, In time you may find you will be able use dreams to help heal others and read in to them to help others and yourself to stay on the correct path or help with your personl development,, But first off you must start to get a understanding of dreams here I have wrote some basics to understanding dreams also some extra information to try to use dreams for yourself to improve your life and create some understanding as and when you need it.
DREAMS
Dreams have always been a fascinating subject through the ages and in many cultures they believed they were there for many different reasons. There was also a belief that they were sent the dreams by external forces and that they were more than personal like warnings prophecies or messages from the gods some believed that they were given them to solve problems heal sickness and provide spiritual revelations. Over the years they soon realised that dreams and their meanings were from the unconscious mind but it was 'nt until the 19 century that they started to get to understand them better using psychoanalysis read up on carl jung and sigmund freud for better understanding.
People spend about a third of their lives asleep and only a quarter of that dreaming , that means you roughly have around 2 hours dream sleep a night. It is this sleep where you work out all your unconscious memories and desires. Some memories are to painful to work through at the time it is happening so the unconscious mind works them out when you will accept them better this is when they make them more like symbolic and at times they can be hard to work out but if you start to write your dreams down as soon as you wake up it can help you to understand where you are within your life at the moment.
When you write your dreams down try to include any themes that may run through it the settings of where the dream is happening the people who are in it or animals your feelings of the dream during and after you have woke up any symbols that have stood out to you words and phases that have caught your attention and last but not least numbers colours time of day and the season. All these will help when you first start to interpret your dreams. Best way to interpret dreams is to start with symbols now I know you will be bombarded with lots of images but if you can select certain symbols from that it will be a good place to start with working them out write the symbols down then write what the symbol means to you then if you can meditate on the symbol do so as you will get your inner meaning and I find your inner meaning to be the best one to use along side your thoughts on it, slowly you will start to get meanings which you will start to connect to your life and slowly you will start to understand your dreams.
Though some things you dream may be symbolic in its self and you may need to use other sources to understand them eg folk stories, fairy tales, scriptures ect use all sources available to you to get to understand them fully.
When you are able to understand your dreams you can try the next step of controling your dreams so you can have the advice or help from your inner self that you may need or you may want to relive a dream that may have intrested you. Here is three ways to try :
Psychic way
To do this your first step is to write what you want to achieve or learn from the dream before going to bed you need to immerse your self in it include the people you want where it will start and end and the subject you are wanting to dream on if you have one. You can use pictures of people or objects to get them firmly in your mind.
Affirmation way
create a positive affirmation to help your mind work in a constructive way eg : “i shadow will dream tonight about surfing in wales” or if you want to dream about a certain out come you could say a affirmation like “i shadow will be able to cope with my work load tomorrow” this will help you to understand a solution . You may write it down then throughout the day say it to your self and when you go to bed to sleep repeat it to the rhythm of your breathing.
When you create a affirmation you must keep it positive!!
Visualizing dreams
Visualizing can be used as a day dream that can help bring about a desired mental state , once in bed empty your mind then think clearly as you can about the end result you wish to acheieve from your dream such as a soloution to a problem or a dilema …. now see in your mind how you want to feel or act if your problem was resolved. Let it make you feel relaxed ….... now go to sleep and let your inner mind mull over your problem.
Dream meetings
This is a way of meeting some one who you know in your dreams.
All you need to do is find a partner who you get on with well (those that you perfer to spend time with or are emtionaly connected) and deside on a place you both know well discribe it with each other then deside on a time to meet in your dream. Before going to sleep rehearse it throughout the day dont forget to say the time your meeting your friend in the dream out loud to. When you go to sleep rehearse just one last time and then sleep … upon waking up write down your dream and compare notes with friend (dont worry if it dont work straight away just keep trying) the most important thing is stay patient.
