This project and study was conducted in the US to study what happens when you put good people in an evil place. Does humanity win over evil, or does evil triumph? These are some of the questions we posed in this dramatic simulation of prison life conducted in the summer of 1971 at Stanford University.
It became one of controversy and the study had to be terminated early as it did not go quite as projected. I have included the official web link so you may see the results and follow along with the progression and results of this study.
A movie, somewhat based upon this study and other similar studies was made in the US in 2010. It was called The Experiment and I just recently watched it. It very closely follows the actual study and the results are not what you would expect, but dramatically shows the humans ability to meta-morph into something that has happened in history e.g. Hitler and other men of power and there reign of terror. I highly recommend this movie for it gives great pause to the ways of human nature and given certain conditions how this nature can evolve into something totally unexpected.
No one can predict how mankind can react to certain experiences or situations. It is not an exact science. But it did give great insight into how prisoners (and soldiers) also can change in the face of severe adversity.
