Adelphi Theatre - London
Haunted by the ghost of William Terris recognizable as a fairly tall figure in a grey suit and wearing white gloves.
Terris was a popular actor during the Victorian era, his popularity being ultimately his downfall when he was murdered outside the theatre by a jealous rival.
His ghost is seen not only within the Adelphi but often at Covent Garden underground where he has been seen in the staff area and on the platform.
This has been attributed to the fact that a bakery often frequented by Terris occupied this site before the station was built.
Alexandra Theatre - Birmingham
There is a presence felt here at the rear of the stallsandthis is said to be that of Leon Salburg who managed the theatre for over 25 years and died within it’s walls.
The ghost of a woman has been seen but her identity has yet to be confirmed.
The sound of footsteps has often been heard down a corridor which leadstoan office where a wardrobe master died.
Civic Theatre - Darlington
The original proprietor of this theatre, Signor Pepi ,is still in attendance, although more evident is the sound of his Pekinese trotting across the floor. The dog was buried within the theatre walls.
A number of other presences have been reported including the ghost of a suicide, a female dancer and a former stage manager. Some have reported hearing a child’s cries.
Festival Theatre - Cambridge
In the corridor visitors have felt an intense cold in an area where a former manager hung himself.
The sound of footsteps on the stage and nearby stairs can equally be attributed to a death; that of a woman attacked outside of the theatre. She died shortly after having been brought in and set down on the stage,
Grand Theatre - Lancaster
Allegedly haunted by the ghost of the 18th century Sarah Siddons who died in 1831 aged 76. Her brother was manager at the Grand for a time so it is highly likely that she would have spent time there.
She is seen as a gray figure at the back of the theatre
Her Majesty's Theatre - Haymarket W1 London
The presence of the figure of John Buckstone is a welcome sight for both cast and crew of any new production. Apparently he is only seen when a decent run for a production is assured.
John Buckstone was a clerk turned comedian and managed the theatre from 1853 until 1856.
Lacemarket Theatre - Nottingham Nottinghamshire
Converted to a theatre in the 1970s, this former church is believed to be haunted by a man dressed in clothes of the mid 1940s, seen on a number of occasions..
His identity is not known.
Mansfield Palace Theatre - Mansfield Derbyshire
Another theatre haunted by a former manager - George Kendell who committed suicide in the 1950s.
Sometimes glimpsed in the circle, he normally confines his activities to those of the poltergeist type - opening and closing doors etc.
Theatre Royal St Helens - Merseyside
Source: Warrington Guardian Thursday 27th Nov 2003.
IT appears that the extensively refurbished St Helens Theatre Royal does have a resident ghost, confirming the suspicions of Dave Brown of Whiston who asked (October 30) whether such a phantom had ever truly existed.
A knowledgeable follower of this page, asking to remain anonymous, says the theatre's ghost is the only St Helens example in Muriel Armand's 1993 book, 'The Ghosts of Lancashire'.
"According to the author, the apparition is thought to be the spirit of a manager who ran the theatre around the turn of last century when he committed suicide there". An usherette working at the theatre during the 1980s apparently gave the author an account of her sighting of a ghostly half-figure outline in black shoes with side buttons and spats; pinstripe trousers and either a long frock-coat or cloak.
She later learned of the old-time manager's body being found in the auditorium in identical attire. Then, in 1986 she spotted a lone mysterious figure standing in the dress circle who then mysteriously disappeared.
