The last week I have realised my meditation has become self hypnosis. So I started again from the beginning a few days ago, just sitting and noticing eyes open, no ear plugs. And during the day doing 30 sec meditations.
Mindfulness is like a crystal clear presence that descends over our surroundings and it is a bit scary really. I become aware of how much work my body is doing just to exist like it does. And I feel for it. I have compassion for it in all it's struggles, as the bodymind makes it's way through this ever demanding world. This is without a doubt the starting point for me, not some altered state or attainment, but to be right where I am all the time.
Mindfulness gives rise to metta, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity, and it starts first directed towards our bodymind. Then our surroundings and other people.

I liked your post and I myself stop several times a day just to quiet my mind and remind myself to be in the NOW, for it is all I have control over. Meditation is to me being able to quiet my mind and body and listen to the whispers of my heart which gives me great messages and knowledge I would not get otherwise. It is not a chore but a time for peace in my spirit and my soul. It is something I look forward to and it always refreshes my being.
So many people think meditation is so hard. I find it to be very easy. It quiets the ego mind and all of its babbling and lets you refocus on the moment you are in and rejoice in being able to attain that time. Sometimes we don't realize that we are our own Guru, so to speak. For those that are attracted to so-called Guru's are mostly attracted to the peace and vibrations this individual has learned to achieve and send out.
It is something we all have the will and power to do, once we learn it is not a hard achievement, but one of ease and peace that is always there for our calling of it.
