Sorry if you think this may be a bit of a silly post, could you please explain to me the reasons/benefits of meditating? When you are meditating, what should you be getting out of it and why do it? I understand the relaxing side of it, the clearing of your mind etc but is there something deeper? I am interested in starting and have read a few books with advice on how to do it but I'd just like to know the benefits and what I should be feeling throughout (if I do it properly!).Thanks so much in advance.

Meditation is like a piece of the puzzle. The experiences meditation has to offer are well worth the work and discipline required, but meditation is a method- it's not for everyone nor is it required. A lot of people, from what I've read, believe meditation is supposed to do something, or yield something. In a lot of cases it doesn't happen the way it is expected to, or it is cracked up to be. There is a lot to gain from it, though, depending on the direction of your journey and what you truly desire.

My suggestion is you leave the stories about other peoples experiences to them... You can find a simple method and start the practice and experience it as it is for you.
My suggestion for someone who just wants to start is a very simple method:
Be comfortable and close eyes and relax.
Do not change your rate and depth of breathing, just notice the sensation of air moving in and out of your nostrils.
Remain aware of that sensation. If the mind wanders off with the chitter chatter, that's fine, merely return attention to the sensation in the nose.
Remain aware of the air as it moves in and as it moves out.
Go with it.
Peace and Love
