MICROCOSMIC ORBIT
This is a classic Taoist meditation method for circulating qi (chi) - internal life energies - through the meridians, chakras and organ systems.
The basis of the orbit is the two main energy channels in the body:
Governing/Yang channel which rises from the root up the spine, over the top of the head and curving inward
Central/Yin channel which flows from the low center of the head (or roof palate of the mouth) down along the front of the body to the root.
Consistent practice increases the flow of energy in the brain and meridians and cultivates health and longevity, while supporting one’s other practices to develop higher spiritual awareness. As your energy frequencies are smoothed, balanced and heightened your thought processes and emotions will also become clearer and your awareness more subtle.
It’s important to take moderate physical exercise and eat fresh wholesome foods to support the aim of this practice, as impurities in the body hinder the flow of chi.
Take several minutes for each step.
Step 1 - Breathe through your nose in your lower abdomen (the hara) below your navel, with your attention in your belly breathing. Continue as your mind begins to slow down and you begin to feel centered within yourself.
Step 2 - Visualize a point or ball of clear golden light in your abdomen about 2" below the navel. Breathe into the area, deeply yet lightly and smoothly.
Step 3 - When the light energy feels stable and full in the abdominal center, visualize the golden light from it flowing down into the root center, the perineum, and pooling there.
Step 4 - Place the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth. Inhale and breathe the golden light up along your spine into the center of your head where you may begin to see a clear seed light, in the pineal area.
Step 5 - Exhale, breathing the light energy down the front of your body, through each of the chakras then down to the root.
Step 6 - Continue breathing and circulating the golden light in a smooth flow for 10 to 30 breaths.
Note: In the beginning you may need more than one breath to complete the orbit.
At some points you may experience tingling, trembling or pulsing in your body, which are indications that the energies are becoming enhanced and you are becoming more aware of your subtle non-physical energies.
There are more complex versions of the Microcosmic Orbit but this one is more than adequate for most people.
SUSHUMNA CIRCULATION
Once the circulation orbit is well established through regular practice you may feel guided inward to the central energy column of the body, the sushumna which is aligned within the spinal cord.
Here energy and awareness is progressively refined and transmuted through three subtle centers, the “elixir fields" or tan tiens, the goal being to create an immortal spirit body through which you may function on a higher plane of consciousness than the ordinary.
Because of this focus in the more subtle dynamic flow and circulation of chi, very little attention is place on the chakras but one associates with and develops the three tan tiens… the upper tan tien in the center of the head, the middle in the heart center, and the lower below the navel.
