This is really a little known fact and since it happened so many years ago, it is not widely known that the pathologist who did the autopsy on Einstein actually stole his brain, lying and saying he had the families consent (which he did not) so he could try and study it and find out why Einstein was so intelligent.
The interesting part is Thomas Harvey, the pathologist who stole the brain, was never able to unlock the secret. He treated the brain to preserve it and kept it in a mayonnaise jar. He was only a pathologist and had no idea really of how or what to look for in terms of the brain to give him any clues to his quest.
But no one tried harder than a pathologist named Thomas Harvey, who lost his job and his reputation in a quest to unlock the secrets of Einstein's genius. Harvey never found the answer. But through an unlikely sequence of events, his search helped transform our understanding of how the brain works.
The story of this man and his forty years of driving around the states with the mayo jar and Einstein's brain in the front seat beside him in his car is a weird one to be sure. But in the end, it broke new research into the scientific world of the brain.
The full story can be read at www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=126229305
This is a believe it or not it is really true kind of story.
